oral surgery

The field of oral surgery encompasses various procedures, perhaps the common and familiar of which is the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Also known as third molars, wisdom teeth are the last set of adult teeth to develop. Often, one or more become impacted, or trapped between the jawbone and the gum tissue, causing pain, inflammation, and infection of the gums. Surgical removal is commonly indicated in such cases.

A wide variety of additional conditions are addressed through oral surgery. Teeth other than wisdom teeth may also become impacted and need to be surgically extracted. Issues with jaw development sometimes lead to difficulties with eating, speaking, and breathing too severe to be corrected by braces. Misalignment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), where the lower jaw and cranium meet, can cause severe headaches and facial pain—these situations often call for oral surgery. The field has developed techniques for dealing with severe snoring and sleep apnea. More overt problems such as lesions, cleft lips and palates, and facial injuries and infections also fall under the purview of the oral surgeon.

We view ensuring your comfort and peace of mind as an integral part of all the surgical work we do.
