veneers Veneers are ultrathin shells of restorative material that are bonded directly to the surface of your teeth. Made of porcelain or a composite material, the veneer forms a strong, durable covering for the tooth that is highly resistant to staining. The semitranslucent quality of the veneer is almost identical to that of the enamel that forms your teeth’s surface, giving your teeth a very natural, lustrous appearance.
The veneer procedure is a straightforward one in most cases. The surface of the tooth is usually reduced by a tiny amount so that when the veneer is applied it forms an even plane with the adjoining teeth. Once the veneer, customized for the desired color and shape, is applied, you can almost immediately begin eating and drinking—and brushing and flossing—as you normally would. Veneers are very long-lasting, often still doing their job twenty years later.
