cerec

CEREC is an advanced system, employing computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology, that allows the creation and fitting of crowns and other dental restoration products during just a single visit. Not only do you save time, you also avoid having to deal with temporary crowns.

A proprietary system, CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That’s exactly what it allows, and here’s how it works: the tooth is prepared for restoration normally, then photographed by a 3D-imaging camera. A highly detailed digital model is created and refined by comparison to imaging data from the adjacent teeth. When the model is finished, the digitized information is sent to a milling machine located in the office. The machine, equipped with precision diamond-head cutters, carves the restoration out of a block of ceramic or similarly durable composite material in twenty minutes or less. If the resulting restoration makes a good fit, it can be cemented to the tooth right then and there.

In addition to the on-site technology, the procedure requires specialized training. As an active member of New York’s CEREC professional development group, Dr. Sengos is one of the region’s leading practitioners in the field.
